. Pros Linux, Mac, and Windows versions. Cons Lacks transcoding, remote management, and in-client search results and torrent ratings.
Unattractive interface. Bottom Line BitTorrent 7.2 features multi-OS support, an intuitive interface, swift downloads, and an apps center, but it could use better search results and visual polish. BitTorrent may be the name associated with illegal sharing and copyright violation, but the technology is one that makes it remarkably simple to quickly download filesa useful tool for those who endured long waits when using other services. There are many BitTorrent clients around, but the official BitTorrent client is the granddaddy of them all. The latest 7.2 build (there's a 7.0 and version available) is virtually identical to the company's own uTorrent client, but differs in the fact that it's positioned as the groundfor those fresh to P2P sharing go to get their feet wetuTorrent is where longtime users participate in experimental research and development features. Overall, BitTorrent is a capable client, but Vuze (a competing BitTorrent offering) offers a superior all-around experience. Note: If you download copyrighted content, be prepared to pay the penalty.
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has not only closed down torrent sites, but sued peer-to-peer server operators; the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has sent out nearly 2 million copyright infringement warnings. Upon launching the software, you're greeted with an interface that's divided into two sections: A large main section that has a search box for scouring the Web for torrents, and a sidebar with numerous sections that let you check torrents' downloaded statuses (Completed, Active, Inactive), have content pushed to you via RSS, and explore the App Studio. Clicking any of those categories (save for Apps) lets you open a torrent from your hard drive, add one from a URL, or even create one via a toolbar at the top of the application window. All in all, it's simple and easy to use. Acquiring and Managing Content BitTorrent works by allowing the computer that has the torrent to gather bits and pieces of the desired file from other available BitTorrent users. It's this efficient process that makes downloading large files far faster than with other peer-to-peer protocols that connect one PC to another lone PC.
I chose as my test file Four Eyed Monsters, a 70-minute independent film freely distributed by The Co-Create. I didn't find it via the built-in search box, which opens a Web browser tabsomething I found annoying. Instead, it was highlighted on uTorrent's Web site, which is fortunate, as BitTorrent's search results led me to rather dubious-looking sites. Vuze, a competing BitTorrent client, has a built-in search engine that displays results within the application. Even better, clicking the Meta tab lets you view ratings, so you know that you're getting a good torrent. BitTorrent would be wise to adopt a similar search strategy.
The client supports Protocol Encryption, which is designed to bypass ISP throttling or blocking attempts. Double-clicking the file began the torrenting process by drawing the necessary file data from 26 seeds. During that time, icons located in the top toolbar that were once grayed outPause, Stop, and Removebecame available for use.
At the bottom of the interface are tabs that let you see the connection speed, the number of peers, and other metrics. The 1.06 GB of files downloaded in just under 5 minutes, and smoothly played back in QuickTime. I decided to test BitTorrent 7.2's ability to handle multiple files at once by downloading five movie files (ranging in size from 14 minutes to 95 minutes) to a home computer to replicate the everyday user experience. Downloading everything took 2 hours and 21 minutes over a Verizon FiOS connection; not bad considering that three of my movies were at least 84 minutes in length, and one video went unseeded for nearly an hour.
Naturally, your download time will vary depending on connection speed, the number of seeders available, and other factors. Right clicking a file lets you set upload and download speed limits, remove the torrent from the program, delete it from your hard drive, and choose other options for controlling and managing the torrent. I especially liked the ability to label content with keywords, which gives you quick access to categories or genres.
For example, when I tagged Four-Eyed Monsters with 'romance,' the tag appeared in the left sidebar with an associated numerical value that shows how many other files used that tag. This is a feature that I would like to see the Vuze client adopt. Extras BitTorrent's App Studio comes pre-installed with 13 apps for obtaining additional content without prowling the Web. The Raptr app, for example, lets you download a number of free-to-play PC games. Torrent Tweet adds social networking by theoretically allowing you to use Twitter from within the BitTorrent client, but it was glitchyit wouldn't accept the passwords associated with my Twitter accounts. There's even an app that installs antivirus software that's powered by BitDefender.
Overall, it's a surprising addition, although I'm not sure how often I would personally use it. When I fire up a BitTorrent client, social networking and antivirus aren't on the brain, which is why I find Vuze's HD Network (a video repository for online shows) far more intriguing. BitTorrent lacks remote management features found in Deluge and Vuze. Should You Use BitTorrent? If you want to quickly download large files BitTorrent 7.2 (and its brother uTorrent) is a solid selection, and its Labels and App Studio features make it worth consideration.
BitTorrent 7.2 suffers from an unattractive interface, however, and it lacks the Editors' Choice award-winning Vuze's intuitive search engine and file-conversion abilities. More Utilities Reviews: . Senior Analyst, Software For more than a decade, Jeffrey L.

Contents. History Early development Out of general discontent with, Serge Paquet suggested to that he should make a smaller and more efficient BitTorrent client. Strigeus began to conceptualize the plans for the program's development, which, at the time, did not include making the client feature-rich. After initially working on it for about a month during the last quarter of 2004 (the first build is dated October 17, 2004), mostly during his free time before and after work, Strigeus ceased coding µTorrent for a year.
He resumed work on September 15, 2005, and three days later, the first public release (version 1.1 beta) was made available as, and began generating feedback. PeerFactor SARL On March 4, 2006, PeerFactor SARL announced the signing of a six-month contract with Strigeus for the development of 'new content distribution applications on the Web.' PeerFactor SARL is a relatively new company formed by former employees of PeerFactor, which was a subsidiary of the French anti-piracy organization. Ludde stated that his coding for PeerFactor SARL was to use his expertise at optimization of the BitTorrent to create a which PeerFactor SARL intended to use as part of a distribution platform for files in a corporate setting. At the time there was some speculation that μTorrent may have been modified to spy on users on Peerfactor's behalf, however to date (even following μTorrent's acquisition by BitTorrent, Inc.) no evidence has been produced to support these allegations. Ownership change On December 7, 2006, µTorrent was purchased by, as it was announced on their official forum. On September 18, 2007, 6.0 was released.
Although previous versions of the BitTorrent client had been, it has been closed source since version 6. In April 2017, BitTorrent founder announced that the next version of µTorrent would be based. Firon, an administrator of the µTorrent community forum, said that they had been working on this project for a few months prior to the release as it was the most requested feature for some time. This release is intended for users who are seeking a fast based client with a remote web-based management. They also mentioned that a full featured client with a is a work in progress.
He also said: ' This is a native Linux port and is known to work on 9.10+, 5+ and 12+. Others may work, but they are not officially supported.

Currently μTorrent supports or newer and or newer. Revenue In early versions, Strigeus had built in a web redirection via nanotorrent for search queries entered through the search bar that displayed advertisements in a frame on the web browser. Some users thought this suspicious because tracking could be implemented by recording the of those downloading/receiving the advertisements, and the search functionality could easily be used to track user queries through whichever web-interface the client is going through to execute the search.
After a short trial period, the advertising was disabled, mitigating possible concerns. A later version of the software has, instead of ads, a 'search all sites' feature, which is a keyword-based search bar that delivers listings of torrent files at different trackers. A frame at the top displays advertisements (server-side) in the browser when the search function is used.
In version 1.5, no ads are present in the program itself. As of build 463, a redirect bypass feature became available in the Advanced options. As of version 1.8.2, the µTorrent installer gives the user the option to download and install the.
This is done on the first run of the program and the user may explicitly opt out of this feature by deselecting it. The developers stated the addition was needed for funds to continue development. In late 2010, this was replaced with the. Toolbars In late 2010, some controversy arose with a release of µTorrent which included in the form of the Engine, which installed a toolbar, and made homepage and default search engine changes to a user's web browser.
A number of users reported that the installation was made without the user's consent. There were some complaints that the adware software was difficult to remove. In 2011, µTorrent bundled the. Paid version On July 15, 2011, BitTorrent announced that they would offer a paid version of µTorrent called 'µTorrent Plus'. This new version would offer extra features, such as integrated file conversion, anti-virus and a built in media player. On 6 October 2011, the of µTorrent Plus was released to an invitation only community.
As of December 2011, µTorrentPlus 3.1 was available for $24.95; as of December 2014, the Plus version was available as a $19.95 yearly subscription. Ads and malware In August 2012, BitTorrent announced the addition of in the free version of µTorrent which could be individually dismissed by users. Due to response from users, a few days later, the company stated that ads could be optionally turned off.
A user-created tool known as 'Pimp My µTorrent' was also created to simplify the process of disabling ads in the Windows version. Starting with µTorrent version 3.2.2, the software also contains in-content advertisements described as 'Featured Torrent'. As with ads, it is possible to disable this content. In March 2015, it was alleged that µTorrent had automatically installed a program known as Epic Scale—a program classified as ' by some security programs, which mines the in the background for BitTorrent, Inc. A µTorrent developer disputed the claim that it was automatically installed, and claimed that as with all other 'partner' programs bundled with the software, users could decline the installation. On March 28, Epic Scale was permanently removed from the installation and as a software bundle partner. Pronunciation The author of µTorrent wrote in 2005, 'I usually say 'you torrent' because it looks like a u', and offered 'microtorrent', 'mytorrent' (as 'my' myː is the Swedish pronunciation of the Greek letter µ) and later 'mutorrent' as alternate pronunciations. In Greece, where the software is widely used, it is called 'me torrent', since the letter μ of the Greek Alphabet is called 'me' in modern Greek. The symbol μ is the lowercase letter, which stands for the ' meaning 'one millionth'.
It refers to the program's small footprint. Contributors Original development was performed by ('ludde', from ), the creator of µTorrent. Serge Paquet ('vurlix', from ) acted as release coordinator, and had intended to work on Linux and Mac OS X ports. He maintained the µTorrent website and forum up until the end of 2005, but is no longer affiliated with µTorrent. Since its purchase in 2006, development has been performed by various employees of Bittorrent Inc. Strigeus is no longer affiliated.
Reception μTorrent was once praised for its small size and minimal computer resources used, which set it apart from other clients. Stated that it 'packs an outstanding array of features' in 2006 and listed it in their 2008 'Best free 157 software tools'. It was also in 's '101 Fantastic freebies'. The website.com said it was the most feature rich BitTorrent client available, later summarizing a 2009 study which concluded that 'µTorrent Download Speeds Beat Vuze By 16%' on average and 'on 10% of the 30 most used ISPs, µTorrent users were downloading 30% faster than Vuze users'.
Said it was the best BitTorrent client available, citing its small size and 'minimal impact to the rest of your computer's speed.' Said its 'memory footprint is also ridiculously small'. PC & Tech Authority magazine (Australia) gave it 6 stars (out of 6).
Torrent Software Review
Rated it the best BitTorrent client available (Windows) in 2008 and 2011 (Windows and Mac ).com gave it 5 stars (of 5) saying it features 'light and quick downloading'. In November 2009, 52 million users were reported to be using the application, and in late 2011, 132 million. . shares. Torrent files are a special type of assistive file that helps to distribute (download and upload) primary files between users’ computers. Basically, when you download a file with the help of a torrent file distribution system, you get it straight from another user’s computer. These torrent files require special torrent clients to be both downloaded (peered) and uploaded (leeched).
There are plenty of torrent clients available today; some of them are open source, some contain ads, and some offer extended features. If you wish to and are interested in the best torrent clients, read our review of the best free torrent clients of 2017 in this article. QBittorrent is a free and open source torrent client that supports Windows, Mac, Linux, and FreeBSD operating systems. The in-built search option lets you search for the required torrents online. Users can also select the output folder, create and share their custom torrents, customize the torrents’ queue, and add torrents from RSS feeds. Rating by Icecream Apps: 10/10 2. Initially Transmission was a Mac torrent client; however, recently, there’s a Windows and a Linux version of the program.
The program is rather lightweight and it provides high-speed seeding and leeching. There are plenty of useful add-ons that you can install for the program to work with it in the most efficient way. Rating by Icecream Apps: 10/10 3. BitTorrent is another well-known torrent client that is available for Windows, Mac, and Android and that was developed by BitTorrent.
The program also contains in-built ads, just like uTorrent. Actually, this program is a rebranded version of uTorrent. Users can search for the torrents, conduct multiple torrent processing, and create custom users’ torrent files.
Rating by Icecream Apps: 9/10 4. UTorrent, released in 2005, is probably the most well-known torrent client. This program is available for Windows, Mac OS, and Android. The only downside of the program is that in the free version, there are ads. As for the benefits, the program is of a compact size, it automatically downloads torrents from RSS, and it lets you create your own torrents.
Rating by Icecream Apps: 8/10 5. Deluge is a pretty basic cross-platform torrent client with a very standard interface. The program is compact in size and is open source. Advantages are that there are no ads in the program and there are also a number of plugins that can be installed to make the torrent client more effective. The disadvantage is that the program doesn’t offer anything special – it’s a standard torrent client with standard options. Rating by Icecream Apps: 8/10 6. Vuze torrent client is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android.
It’s a free software with ads (there are toolbars and other programs that are offered to be installed with the software). The program is compatible with I2P and Tor network. There are also plenty of useful settings including customizable peer and leech speeds available. Rating by Icecream Apps: 6/10 7. BitComet is a freeware Windows torrent client that has no ads. The program not only works with torrents, but can also be used as a download manager of non-torrent type files.
One of the cool features of the program is that files can be opened while they are still being downloaded. The program has plenty of features and options to be tweaked in its settings. Rating by Icecream Apps: 6/10 Torrenting might not be legal in all cases, so we strongly recommend not to use torrent clients to download any pirated, illegally modified, or copyright-protected content. Don’t come to the dark side, there are no cookies there after all.

This is one of the best apps out there! Its easy to use and so far I haven't had any problems and I have had this FREE app for about 4 months. The playback quality is excellent. It does take awhile to download sometimes, but It is well worth the end results.
This is easy to use even if you don't have a lot of computer savvy!!!. I imagine that the paid version will blow this free app out of the water!!
Keep up the great work that you do to bring us great entertainment!! Bought the updated version for 1.99 well worth it!!! The only problem that I have is that I don't know how to transfer the downloads that are currently active on the free version to the RT version.
